A father of a 34 year old male who had died after Knee Surgery (Anterior Collateral Ligament). 

A classic case of Operation successful, patient dead

Key Issues: Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis, Suspecting and not treating deep vein thrombosis.

Learning Outcomes: Clinicians should give Deep Vein Thrombosis prophylaxis with Heparin 

A 34 year old male from Bengaluru, visited FXXXX Hospital in Bengaluru in 2010 for Anterior Collateral Ligament injury and posted for Laparoscopic Arthroscopic Surgery. After repeated follow-up, the patient died suddenly. The Clinician had suspected Pulmonary Embolism, but sent the patient home with Paracetamol


The cause of Sudden Death was due to Acute Pulmonary Embolism which developed as a result of Acute Deep Vein Thrombosis.

The death was preventable, since Deep Vein Thrombosis prophylaxis was NOT followed, despite the patient being the candidate for prophylaxis.


I analysed the case and helped the patient's family in Medical Council (State and National). It is ongoing in National consumer court.
